Solo Peaks is an inspiring and fascinating story of adventure and resilience. Specifically, the film documents the journey of eco-adventurer Isaac Kenyon in his attempt to set a World record running across the Welsh countryside and over the country’s three highest mountains. Through capturing his attempt on film, this documentary aims to inspire viewers and raise awareness with regard to the role that outdoor spaces can play in maintaining a healthy state of mind.
On a personal level, the opportunity to join Isaac on this journey was a chance I could not miss. As a junior photographer and endurance runner myself, I have many aspirations to grow my cinematography skillset in line with nature and climate-based topics and have learnt a lot from my 4 days documenting the process.
As a videographer, director and editor, this documentary was a chance to really throw me into the deep end. Faced with the challenge of capturing Isaacs's run in real-time, the need for precision without wanting to negatively impact his attempt required meticulous planning as well as the ability to be proactive in preparing each shot. Often, this required summiting with equipment ahead of Isaac in addition to organising myself such that I could capture footage from both ground levels in addition to via drone. For a first foray into the world of adventure filmmaking, I hope to have succeeded in creating a film that captures the motivations behind Isaacs's feat whilst at the same time highlighting the extreme challenge faced on this journey.
Visually, there are three main themes to the film: the landscapes journeyed through, the intense running, and the interview reflecting on the journey and underlying motivations. I wanted to showcase the beauty of the green spaces journeyed through; to achieve this, sweeping drone footage is combined with wide-angle shots to provoke awe. This contrasts with POV and close-up footage of Isaac, which is especially striking during the long periods of time he spent isolated in rugged mountain spaces. Finally, the interview scenes provide a time for reflection and bring the audience back to the core message of the project.
